Tasting Notes 2

I managed to try a few more beers over the weekend, soften the blow of returning to work on the Monday!

Again, Morrisons suppied a few of the ales, and as I said before, they’ve got a cracking bottled range, so check it out if you can.

Also, had the pleasure of a couple of cask ales, one local, one not so local. So let’s start the review!

Signature Professor Green’s Remedy Pale Ale. 4.5%

Image

For those who don’t know, Professor Green is a UK rapper, been around a little while, and getting a bit more recognition lately by working with more well known artists like Lily Allen. He’s worked with Signature Brew to produce an American style pale ale here, with none to shabby results! It’s a light gold coloured ale when poured, and produces a light golden head. On the nose is very clean and zesty, with notes of grapefruit and lemon. Upon tasting, it has a hoppy start, that turns into a zesty, sweet, middle with hints of coriander. The end is very floral, in traditional pale ale style, with a lasting, bitter end. Overall, its lemony, light, and pleasant to drink. If his populatrity with younger people generates an interest in craft beers, all the better.

Franziskaner Weissbier Hefe-Weizen. 5%

Image

A typical German wheat beer, that produces a cloudy, straw coloured ale when poured with a great thick head that lasts all the way down. On the nose is very yeasty, like freshly baked bread or rising dough, and a hint of banana sweetness in the background. Upon tasting, it is sweet, not overly so though, with spicyness running through it. I taste nutmeg, cloves and coriander. It has a creamy texture, with a slight clementine finish. Easy to drink, extremely good ale. Would definately recommend. And will definately drink again.

Adnams Spindrift East Cost Blonde. 5%

Image

Adnams produce some great ales, so was looking forward to a lighter brew from them.

When poured, the beer is a light golden colour, however the foamy head fades quite quickly, leaving very little on top. Dirty class, maybe?

I get a good sniff of the top of the beer, and I’m surprised to find aromas of fruit salad sweets, the pineapple and raspberry chews made by Baratts! Nice though!

The taste follows up the scents, with a fruity base of mango, pineapple and raspberry. Next comes a floral tang, and it finishes with a bitter crisp end.

Good flavour, however more of a Summer drink, too light for this time of year.

Morrisons IPA (By Marstons). 5.8%

Image

Another from Morrisons, their own brand but produced by Marstons. Bottle says traditional British IPA, I’ll give it a go!

On pouring, it’s a light gold ale with not too much head, that disipates to a thin layer that lasts all the way to the end.

On the nose, it’s quite fresh and floral, hints of sweetness.

When quaffed, the taste is light and apple-sweet, with a floral, bitter finish.

It’s ok, nothing major really, a bit non-descript.

Tudor Brewery IPA. 4.5%

First of the cask ales from the weekend, and what a fine example of craft brewing.

A darker IPA, more dark caramel in colour. A great head that lasts the full pint too, not too often you see that.

On the nose is light floral notes, with hints of orange zest and sweetness.

When drunk, there’s a starting fruity sweetness, like caramelised orange slices. This fades to be replaced by a typical floral note, and finishes with a light, crisp bitterness. It’s one of the best IPAs I have tasted from the cask in a good while. Do try it if you find it!!

Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project. Jack D’Or. 6%

Image

Half a pint of this IPA from Massachusetts, due to percentage and driving. But enough to get a good review.

Straw gold colour, good head that stays with the drink.

Opens with a mild zesty scent. Taste begins with a creamy, light texture as it caresses the mouth. There’s a light fizz, not overly carbonated. Creamyness is replaced by a light, orangeblossom honey sweetness, that gives way to zesty coriander and a floral bitter finish. It’s a nice beer, but the bitter end lasts for a good while.
